Glossy vs Matt Tiles: Which Finish Is Right for Your Home?
High-gloss tiles make rooms brighter and feel larger, while matt tiles are calmer and offer better grip. Here is how to choose the right finish for every room.

The finish of a tile changes how a room looks and feels as much as its colour or pattern. The two most popular choices for vitrified tiles are glossy (including high-gloss and polished) and matt. Neither is better in every situation — each suits different rooms and lifestyles.
What is a glossy tile?
A glossy tile has a smooth, reflective surface. Light bounces off it, so floors and walls look brighter and rooms feel more spacious. High-gloss marble-look designs — statuario, onyx and gold-veined patterns — are especially popular for living rooms, lobbies and showrooms because they give a luxurious, polished-stone look.
Advantages of glossy tiles
- Make rooms look brighter and larger
- Rich, deep colours and crisp marble veining
- Very easy to wipe clean — stains sit on the surface
- A premium look for living rooms, dining areas and commercial spaces
Things to keep in mind
- Wet glossy floors can be slippery, so they are not ideal for bathrooms, balconies or outdoor areas
- Footprints and dust show more easily on dark glossy colours
What is a matt tile?
A matt tile has a soft, non-reflective surface. It looks more natural and understated — closer to real stone, concrete or wood — and offers better grip underfoot.
Advantages of matt tiles
- Better slip resistance, especially when wet
- Hides footprints, water marks and small scratches
- Calm, natural look that suits modern and rustic interiors
- A good choice for kitchens, bathrooms, balconies and high-traffic areas
Things to keep in mind
- Does not reflect light, so small or dark rooms can feel a little smaller
- Textured matt surfaces need a brush rather than just a mop for deep cleaning
Which finish for which room?
| Room | Recommended finish |
|---|---|
| Living room & dining | Glossy or high-gloss |
| Bedroom | Glossy or satin |
| Kitchen floor | Matt |
| Bathroom floor | Matt (anti-skid) |
| Bathroom & kitchen walls | Glossy |
| Balcony, terrace, parking | Matt, rustic or carving |
| Offices & showrooms | High-gloss for impact, matt for busy walkways |
Can you mix both?
Yes — and it often looks best. A common approach is a high-gloss floor in the living area with matt tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms, or a glossy feature wall above a matt floor. Keep the colour family consistent so the two finishes feel connected.
